In a team setting and cGMP environment, the Assistant Scientist performs routine analytical testing in support of raw material, lot clearance and stability study testing. The position prepares and standardizes test / volumetric solutions, standard solutions and samples for various chemical and physical tests according to approved methods. The Assistant Scientist performs routine analyses including HPLC, GC, UV Spectrophotometry, FTIR, NIR, and Karl Fischer, prepares data and documentation using calculators and computer software and peer review, evaluates and investigates results from various analyses. The position participates in special projects such as laboratory equipment validation, analytical method transfers and SOP reviews. The Assistant Scientist assists and trains other chemists in everyday laboratory functions and properly disposes of sample preparations and solutions according to safety and environmental procedures. The Assistant Scientist maintains and troubleshoots instrumentation within the laboratory, investigates and evaluates analytical data and performs special projects involving such things as method transfer, assisting other laboratories, method validation, equipment purchase and set up, creating training modules or SOP’s. This position involves choice of action within limits defined by procedures and general instructions and encounters situations which are, for the most part, similar and well defined and can be resolved by discriminating choices among learned things. The Assistant Scientist takes action as indicated by general instructions, established procedures and clearly defined policies, exercises limited initiative and ingenuity in dealing with varying circumstances and changing conditions, resolves routine problems, with close supervisory review and works under direct supervision of progress and results.The Assistant Scientist customarily requires internal interaction with: peers, exempt employees and Manager / Directors. Externally, the position interacts with consumers of Janssen products / services, J&J Corporate – Sr. Management, other J&J affiliates, government agencies, vendors and consultants. The position is located in Vacaville, CA and requires up to 5% domestic travel.
Qualifications
It is required the Assistant Scientist possess a minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent. An Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree preferred. A BS/BA Chemistry, Biology, or equivalent preferred. The position requires a minimum of 4 years of analytical or pharmaceutical (cGMP environment) experience and a High School Diploma or equivalent; or a minimum of 2 years of analytical or pharmaceutical (cGMP environment) experience with an AS Degree; or 0-2 years of analytical or pharmaceutical (cGMP environment) experience with a BS Degree. The Assistant Scientist is required to possess the ability to lift 20lbs, follow safety guidelines and SOP’s, work with hazardous chemicals and remain standing for extended periods of time.
