The new Lead Discovery organization within Janssen R&D is building key scientific expertise in pharmacology and chemistry to partner closely with therapeutic area scientists to develop transformational new medicines in Oncology, Inflammation, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular, and Infectious Diseases. We are seeking outstanding drug discovery scientists to join our team to bring their expertise to exciting efforts in novel areas of drug discovery. We are seeking a Global Head of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology.
The Global Head of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology (MCP) will lead a department with four subgroups that possess deep scientific expertise in (1) receptor pharmacology (2) enzymology (3) biophysics and (4) cell pharmacology. The focus of the group will be to provide quantitative pharmacological data and insight to program team from target selection through clinical candidate nomination for the five therapeutic areas in Janssen R&D. The Global Head will work closely with therapeutic area leadership to align closely MCP activities with therapeutic area objectives for development of novel clinical candidates. She/he will bring in-depth expertise and direction to each of the MCP specialization areas, and provide a vision of how the various expertise can be leveraged for greater benefit for program teams. The Global Head will recruit, mentor, and develop outstanding science and create a culture of scientific rigor and innovation. She/he will also be a key member of the Lead Discovery leadership team and contribute to the strategic direction of the larger Discovery Sciences organization.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. or equivalent in biochemistry, pharmacology, cell biology or related field is required. 10+ years of drug discovery experience with a record of major contributions to development of multiple novel clinical candidates is required. Recognized international scientific expert in one of the following areas: enzymology, receptor pharmacology, biophysics, or cellular pharmacology is required. Outstanding record of high impact publications, oral presentations, and review articles is required. Therapeutic area experience in the hit-to-lead and lead optimization activities, including ADME, preclinical safety, and in vivo pharmacology is required. Experienced director-level manager with 5 or more reports in different expertise areas is required. Experience in budget and portfolio management is required. Effective in working with senior management is required. A record of success in working effectively with multiple types of research organizations, including academic institutions, contract research organizations, and public-private consortia is required. Outstanding written and oral presentation capabilities are required. Experience in managing a group at different international research sites is preferred. Experience as a therapeutic program team leader is desired. Depth of expertise in one or more of the following therapeutic areas: Oncology, Inflammation, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular, or Infectious Diseases is preferred. Direct experience in high-throughput screening is preferred. This position is located in Spring House, PA, La Jolla, CA, or Beerse, Belgium. There will be up to 20% domestic and international travel.
