The PET Chemistry Principal Scientist will be a member of the Neuroscience Biomarkers team, and will be responsible for conducting collaborative imaging biomarker research with internal and external partners. This individual will manage chemistry aspects of PET tracer discovery projects aimed at the development of new molecular imaging probes, closely tied to Discovery projects in the Mood and Alzheimer’s Disease areas. S/he will devise and carry out medicinal chemistry plans for tackling imaging probe development, beginning from known leads. This individual will identify and follow SAR trends. S/he will optimize physicochemical properties. S/he will create and defend a data package for each project in support of PET tracer New Molecular Entity (NME) declaration. This individual will manage and report project progress and time lines to the Director of the Imaging lab as well as Discovery scientists in Mood and AD. The scientific focus for the position consists of Neuroscience imaging biomarker projects for target engagement and response measurements in Mood and AD. The operational focus for this position consists of devising chemistry strategies for molecular imaging tracer development programs and managing their execution. This individual will interface with PET Biology and NS Discovery resources for biological data generation. S/he will contribute to pre-clinical testing of candidate tracers, which includes cell and tissue based efficacy assays, selectivity panels, metabolism and biodistribution assays, in vivo testing, and pre-clinical safety determination. S/he will optimize “cold chemistry” labeling and provide optimized conditions to radiochemistry facilities to enable PET tracer generation through 18F or 11C labeling.
The PET Chemistry, Principal Scientist will also interface with internal and external experts. S/he will interact internally with PET tracer scientists, NS Mood and AD DAS Discovery Scientists, Discovery Sciences, Experimental Medicine, purchasing, and contracting. S/he will interact externally with Imaging centers, radiochemistry facilities, CROs (synthesis, biological testing).
Qualifications
A minimum of a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry is required. A minimum of 8 years of medicinal chemistry experience is required. On-the-job experience (>6 years) with imaging biomarker development and preclinical validation, and application in drug discovery, translation and clinical development is required. The successful candidate will have knowledge of medicinal chemistry principles, such as structure-activity profiling, PK optimization, selectivity profiling and metabolism optimization.
Demonstrated competence for people management is required. Strong communication skills are required. Strong collaboration and influencing skills are required. The position is located in La Jolla, CA and may require <10% travel.
