SUMMARY OF THE JOB

This is a key position on the ablation systems team, the one that implements and controls the software of our medical device. The Staff Real Time Software Engineer will develop and maintain the software and firmware used in Biosense Webster’s Cardiac ablation Radio Frequency Generators and supporting test and calibration tools. This is a critical position within the Research & Development engineering team working on the new development and support of the company's next generation Cardiac ablation Radio Frequency generators and irrigation pumps. We are seeking a hands-on software engineer with extensive experience in Windows application development and knowledge of embedded systems to implement versatile code to configure, control, and monitor real time Hard Ware including sensors, output control systems, user interface and communication with external systems. The Real Time Software Engineer will analyze existing code, develop new software and firmware, conduct reviews of outsourced software development and perform Soft Ware testing. With the support of systems engineers, verification and validation engineer and sub-contracted help, this person will enable to future of cardiac ablation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under limited supervision, and in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local laws/regulations and Corporate Johnson & Johnson, procedures and guidelines, the responsibilities of the position include performing or guiding sub-contractors on the activities listed below.

The Staff Real Time Software Engineer will collaborate with scientists and engineers to specify software requirements. S/he participates in development projects core teams as the software technical lead, writes and defines the software design and requirements and creates Windows GUI applications for configuring and controlling the medical device and test tools in real time. S/he will develop robust real-time data acquisition and control system architectures, transfer knowledge (and code) from off-shore teams to be able to perform improvements and new product development based on technology that was already established and analyze existing code and suggest and implement functional and architectural improvements.

The Staff Real Time Software Engineer will develop windows applications/drivers for embedded hardware and for serial communication protocols (RS-232, Ethernet, USB, etc.), create embedded controller firmware to control hardware peripherals and establish and execute test and evaluation procedures. S/he will assist with the design, development, testing and documentation on new and sustaining engineering projects, document software, including requirements, design, and code. S/he will follow software development standards, archiving, and version control (e.g., Subversion), conduct software evaluations, reviews and system analysis and contribute to proposals for further development of the medical devices. S/he will also collaborate with groups outside of direct responsibilities including other engineering groups, Quality, Regulatory, Marketing, etc. S/he may serve as a contact point for outside vendors (including international development groups).

The Staff Real Time Software Engineer will be responsible for communicating business related issues or opportunities to next management level and for ensuring subordinates (if assigned) follow all Company guidelines related to Health, Safety and Environmental practices and that all resources needed to do so are available and in good condition. S/he will be responsible for ensuring personal and Company compliance with all Federal, State, local and Company regulations, policies, and procedures and will perform other duties assigned as needed.

Qualifications


REQUIRED EDUCATION/TRAINING and/or EXPERIENCE:

The Staff Real Time Software Engineer requires 4-6 years of related engineering experience and a Bachelor in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Having an Advanced degree is a plus. S/he must possess practical experience in C/C++, OOA/OOP, Graphical User Interface development, Software Development Tools, Real Time Operating Systems, Embedded Software Development, and Configuration Management and experience in software requirement analysis, code analysis and risk assessment. S/he must be familiar with design control, engineering change orders (ECO), and software version control.

Ideally, the Staff Real Time Software Engineer will be an expert developer of Microsoft Windows .NET GUI applications in C#, have a solid foundation in low-level protocols and protocol stacks for Ethernet, USB, and SPI and working experience with multi-threaded applications. Working experience with embedded microcontroller/microprocessor – preferably PIC, programmable logic experience - preferably Altera is preferred. FPGA coding experience (VHDL or Verilog) is a plus. Python, LabView, or MATLAB and experience in the medical device or the aero-space industries experience is a plus.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES and CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

The Staff Real Time Software Engineer must have excellent communication skills and the ability to express complicated technological ideas in layman terms. The Staff Real Time Software Engineer will be expected to have strong analytical reasoning and the ability to mentor and guide junior fellows. S/he must possess problem solving capabilities and be a self-driven individual who is capable and excited to learn about new technologies.

This position is located in Irwindale, CA and requires up to 10% travel (International and may include travel to Israel) as well as domestic). Weekend travel/work may be required occasionally.
