The Principal Sustaining Engineer will plan and perform research and development studies for development of a new product development or support of a current project. The position plans and conducts design/development engineering assignments generally involving projects of major magnitude and scope, estimates human resource needs and schedules work to meet completion dates and technical specifications and may coordinate and direct engineers, designers and technicians assigned to projects. Responsibilities also include working out proposals and cost estimates, evaluating progress and results and recommending major changes in procedures or objectives. The position will focus on design/development engineering assignments focused on mechanical, electro-mechanical systems, and fluid-mechanical systems. The position generally operates with latitude and has demonstrated leadership abilities.

Essential duties and responsibilities of the Principal Sustaining Engineer include the following: fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of the subject matter, functional area, and assignments, plans and conduct work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria and devises new approaches to problems encountered. The position will Independently perform most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected, receive technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects and plans, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering work in part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope.

The Principal Sustaining Engineer will perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and difficult coordination requirements. Other duties may be assigned. Work requires broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and good knowledge of principles and practices of relates specialties and may technically supervise or coordinate the work of engineers, draftspersons, technicians and others who assist in specific assignments.

The Principal Sustaining Engineer practices company safety, quality policies and procedures, actively requires conformance, is responsible for ensuring personal and company compliance with all Federal, State, local and company regulations, policies and procedures for Health, Safety and Environmental compliance and responsible for performing design reviews and pre-validation assessments to ensure the safe and environmentally sound start-up of new processes.

Qualifications


The Principal Sustaining Engineer requires a minimum of BS Engineering and 12 or more years of related engineering experience; or MS Engineering and 10 or more years of related engineering experience; or Ph.D. in relevant discipline and 8 or more years of related engineering experience. A Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree is preferred. Medical device industry experience and regulated work environment experience is preferred. Experience working with vacuum systems, fluid mechanics, and capital equipment is preferred. Failure investigation experience, experience in initiating and bringing complex projects to conclusion and the ability to work independently and lead a team are required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

The position is located in Irvine, CA and requires up to 10% domestic and international travel.
