The Ethicon Surgical Care business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies—including sutures, surgical staplers, clip appliers, trocars and synthetic mesh devices—that are used in a wide variety of minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. Specialties include support for treatment of colorectal and thoracic conditions, women’s health conditions, hernias, cancer and obesity. The Ethicon Surgical Care business combines products and services of two market-leading legacy companies, both with long histories of medical innovation. The Primary Package Development Engineer is responsible for acting as a Packaging Systems team member on Research & Development projects or portions of major Packaging Systems development projects. Applying knowledge of engineering principles & practices within assignment areas. Planning, executing & controlling major sections of new package development projects. Providing consultation and leadership on Package Engineering issues for Operations & Packaging strategies. Assessing new packaging techniques & overall Operations packaging capabilities, Planning, developing, coordinating & directing package engineering projects concerned with unique problems which have an important effect on major company programs. Directing Operations teams to accomplish packaging & non-packaging related projects, as delegated by the Director of Manufacturing Technology. Writing & submitting to management recommendations for Operations/corporate procedures upon request & provide sustaining / troubleshooting help to plants & teams when required.

Key Job Responsibilities Include: Work in conjunction with the Graphics group to deliver packaging components in a timely manner for Research & Development / Packaging Systems projects. Conduct assignments encompassing complete projects or portions of major projects requiring advanced knowledge of a specialized field. Make decisions independently on engineering problems & methods. Plan, conduct & direct major sections of new package development projects. Determine methods & techniques to be used or adapts standard methods to meet variations. Utilize technical competency, relevant work experience, & comprehensive & diverse package engineering knowledge to generate valid creative solutions. Coordinate & direct the activities of technical support staff (both in-house & outside) in order to achieve objectives. Design, develop, validate, & oversee manufacture, installation, & operation of package components & packaging processes for sterile surgical devices. Plan & execute key engineering assignments concerned with unique or controversial problems having a major impact on Company programs. Plans, develops, coordinates and directs a number of projects of major scope and importance. Has full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing and coordinating assignments. Assist development of overall technical strategy in Packaging for Operations. Manage / direct corporate special projects / initiatives. Provide troubleshooting & technical guidance & consultation to plants. Develop general packaging guidelines & standards for processes & functional requirements. Maintain liaisons with individuals & units within or outside the Company with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to the packaging engineering field. Contribute to the Company with inventions, new designs, processes or techniques which are significant to the solution of important problems. Serve (in the role of staff specialist) as technical advisor for the Company in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles & processes for package engineering. Keep abreast of new scientific methods & developments affecting the organization for the purpose of recommending / assessing changes in existing or new programs / procedures. No direct reports, May direct activities of other team members to achieve specific task assignments. Overnight travel may be required of up to 10%. Other responsibilities may be assigned & not all responsibilities listed may be assigned.

Qualifications


A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably packaging, is required; A minimum of 2 years experience in packaging development is required; Regulated industry experience is preferred; Medical Device experience is preferred; Experience preparing project work plans is preferred; Experience in packaging design and/or validation is preferred; The ability to effectively communicate, written and verbally, technical information and its implications to non technical staff is preferred; The ability to apply Six Sigma and/or lean tools is preferred; Professional judgment to generate valid solutions to technical assignments is preferred; The ability to function independently on specific assignment objectives requiring investigation of a limited number of variables and to function effectively with limited supervision is preferred; Having the professional judgment required to resolve technical, package design, development and/ or processing issues, identifying the timing, and understand the interrelationships of key activities are all highly preferred; Knowledge of packaging graphics, process development validation, testing, equipment and supplier processes are preferred; Materials testing, documentation and ISO 11607 are also preferred for this role; Personal computer skills should include the ability to effectively use Windows word processing, project planning, presentation, e-mail and spreadsheet software is required; The ability to create packaging documentation using CADD (Computer-Aided Drafting & Design) software is preferred.
