Mentor is currently searching for an Advanced Design R&D Director to lead advanced R&D activities at their Santa Barbara, CA location.

This position will primarily be focused on products used for breast reconstruction and augmentation. The Advanced Design R&D Director leads a department engaged in multiple streams of development activities that aggregates consumer needs, market insights, existing or new technologies, and business opportunities to develop and design new products for breast augmentation and reconstruction markets. This individual influences the company's business, tactical directions, and financial results through a sharing of technical expertise. The successful candidate will work with global teams and researchers to conceive and design new technology platforms to deliver novel devices for development and commercialization. At this level, the position has a direct contribution to the development of internal and external business development activities and/or functional strategies and typically, responsibility for managing multiple teams of professionals. S/he has full technical responsibility directing the engineering operations, scientific evaluations of new devices, and technology concepts for future development projects. S/he supervises engineering projects concerned with unique or controversial problems which have an important effect on major organization programs. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation and development of novel concepts and approaches.

The Advanced Design R&D Director maintains worldwide liaison with individuals and units within or outside his/her organization with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to his/her field. This individual acts as the lead technical expert, conceives or is assigned, plans, and conducts research in problem areas of considerable scope and complexity. At this level, the individual and the team they lead will generally contribute inventions, new designs, or techniques which are of material significance in the solution of important problems. S/he serves as the technical expert for the organization (worldwide) in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for an assigned area of responsibility (i.e., subject matter, function, type of facility, or equipment, or product). S/he keeps abreast of new methods and developments affecting his/her organization for the purpose of recommending changes in emphasis of programs or new programs warranted by such development.

The Advanced Design R&D Director is responsible for the advanced R&D lab spaces, purchase or design of equipment, safety and environmental standards set by the company for the R&D labs. This individual is responsible for communications to senior management; communicates technical and nontechnical information to all levels of the organization. S/he champions innovation and people development to strengthen the technical and managerial tracks. S/he is responsible for ensuring personal and company compliance with all Federal, State, local and company regulations, policies and procedures for Health, Safety and Environmental compliance.

Qualifications


A minimum of a Bachelors of Science Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical or Technical Management preferred) or similar technology with a minimum of 12+ years of experience working in industry is required. An Advanced Degree, Master’s Degree and/or PhD with a minimum of 10 years of experience working in industry is preferred. It is preferred to have experience in the Medical Device industry within large or startup organizations. This role requires a creative, hands-on leader to drive the creation and design of new medical devices from concept through the transfer to the development team for commercialization. Knowledge and experience in implementing projects in accordance with Design Control requirements is highly desirable. Specific experience in working with external partners and startup organizations is desirable. Exposure and experience with New Business development activities to expand technology partnerships and capabilities is a plus. Metals & Plastics component process development experience is required. Experience with the use of silicone polymers in device design and assembly techniques preferred. Early prototype concept and process development, design for manufacturing/ design for assembly are required. Experience with managing outside vendors and suppliers are required. Ability to create tooling and fixturing designs for testing and production. CAD experience, preferably SolidWorks and/or Pro E is preferred. The successful candidate must possess a clear mastery of theoretical and practical fundamentals and experimental engineering techniques. S/he must have ability to manage several projects. S/he must possess clearly recognizable outstanding technical qualifications and leadership. Strong English communication skills, written and oral are required. Individuals at this level should have advanced knowledge of & experience in applying engineering principles, analytical techniques & judgment to independently resolve major technical issues & establish new methods, controls & procedures. Experience in project management and PMP certification preferred. Experience in project leadership of New Product Development is required for this role. A person in this position should have demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate multiple team activities independently. It is required that the person in this position will have demonstrated experience in leading multiple complex projects. It will be an asset for the individual in this role to be an authority in one or more technical areas who are often consulted with by peers & junior engineers for guidance in his/her areas of expertise. This position is located in Santa Barbara and may require up to 50% travel both domestic and international.
