Open Application Post-Doctoral Researcher Medicinal Chemistry-00000SRV
Description
BACKGROUND:
Janssen Research & Development seeks to bring innovative, effective treatments in five therapeutic areas: neuroscience, cardiovascular diseases and metabolism, infectious diseases, immunology and oncology. In these areas Janssen aims to address and solve unmet medical needs through the development of vaccines and small and large molecules. The Janssen campus in Beerse (Belgium) is the largest R&D center for small molecules globally, with cutting-edge research facilities in which hundreds of the world’s top researchers work together. It has a successful track record of over sixty years of drug discovery and development, and is one of the most important innovation engines of the Janssen group worldwide.
The Neuroscience (NS) Medicinal Chemistry department is focused on developing innovative small molecule therapeutics for Alzheimer’s Disease. To this end it works closely with the NS Biology department, and both groups are connected via the Johnson & Johnson innovation centers to external partners bringing in the most advanced biological expertise. In addition the NS Medicinal Chemistry department collaborates with academic research groups in synthetic chemistry to have the most up-to-date expertise in building complex organic frameworks during the drug discovery process. To support its research in novel areas of science, the NS Medicinal Chemistry department regularly engages in post-doc level research positions in the field of Medicinal Chemistry related to Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
POSITION SUMMARY:
Post-doctoral research projects in the NS Medicinal Chemistry span a diverse range of topics, including 1) the synthesis of novel scaffolds or chemical groups for use in medicinal chemistry projects 2) the synthesis of novel imaging agents for demonstrating target engagement or monitoring disease progression 3) the design and synthesis of molecules for screening within medicinal chemistry projects on emerging targets in Alzheimer’s disease 4) researching novel brain delivery approaches and synthesis of appropriate probe molecules to validate these. In all these projects post-doctoral researchers perform challenging multi-step organic synthesis, compound purification and structure determination
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Independently plan and execute multi-step synthesis of complex chiral organic target molecules adhering to Janssen’s high standards for compound quality, data integrity and health & safety.
• Provide characterization of intermediates and final compounds using LCMS, 1D/2D NMR, optical rotation (self) and EA, VCD, chiral SFC (via analysts) as appropriate.
• Provide detailed and reproducible electronic lab notebook records.
• Present progress at project meetings and group meetings.
• Quickly become acquainted with the project, and via critical interpretation of data play a prominent role in compound design and decision making towards the project goals.
Qualifications
PROFILE
- Ph.D. degree in Synthetic Organic Chemistry with broad knowledge of the field.
- 1-3 Years of Post-doctoral experience is a plus.
- Synthesis publication track record in high impact journals, and recommendation by reputed academic and/or industrial supervisors.
- Fluent in English
ADDITIONAL COMPETENCIES – SOFT SKILLS
- A passion for hands-on science and delivering quality results.
- Enthusiastic scientist with can-do mentality that proactively connects to the Medicinal Chemistry team and other relevant departments, and fosters discussion and knowledge exchange.
