The selected candidate will join Experimental Pathology, a unit of the Department of Biologics Toxicology. The Experimental Pathology group has expertise in histopathology (i.e., the microscopic structure, compositions, and function of diseased tissues), immunohistochemistry, hematology, clinical biochemistry, microscopy, image analysis, flow cytometry, and cell culture. Core responsibilities will include collaborating with the staff of Janssen Research and Development to perform venipuncture techniques and collect blood and other specimens (hair follicle, buccal swabs) from normal volunteers to support laboratory procedures used in research (IRB approved, must follow SOP). The candidate will be responsible for maintaining documentation and records in the form of electronic notebooks, data binders, and logs.
The Associate Scientist II will also be responsible for maintenance of laboratory equipment, including hematology and clinical chemistry analyzers, and will be the primary operator of these instruments to support processing of samples to support R&D activities. The candidate will schedule PMs by vendors, perform routine maintenance and calibration of the equipment, ensure that the equipment is running properly and have the ability to troubleshoot the systems when problems arise, and order and track materials and supplies for the equipment. The candidate will also process hematology and clinical chemistry of human or animal blood samples to support R&D activities according to study protocols. The candidate will make detailed observations, record data, interpret results from experiments analyzed, and perform graphic analysis of data. The candidate must maintain a record of studies in the form of electronic laboratory notebook (ELN). With guidance, the successful candidate may learn about additional laboratory techniques as warranted. Other responsibilities may include cell culture and assistance in running in vitro assays. Complete R&D and EHS required training as assigned. May perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience is required. Industry experience is preferred. Training in Phlebotomy, Medical Assisting or Medical Technology is required. A qualified individual providing phlebotomy service must be able to show proof of current certification, documented coursework, or equivalent training and experience in phlebotomy. Phlebotomy Certificate, MLT (ASCP) Certificate is preferred. LPN/RN Licensure appropriate to state in which employed is preferred. CPR training is also preferred. Working with BL-1/2 biohazards on a routine basis (occasional work with BL3 is possible). The candidate should have experience using automated instruments. Preference will be given to candidates with experience operating Advia hematology and clinical chemistry instruments. The candidate will have strong computer software program skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel. The candidate must have good organizational skills, be detail-oriented, and have strong team and interpersonal skills. The incumbent may be around employees working with rodents and irritating chemicals, e.g., formalin. This position is located in our Spring House, PA location.
