Mentor is currently searching for a Principal R&D Engineer – Electro-Mechanical, to be located in Santa Barbara, CA.

This position will primarily be focused on products used for breast reconstruction and augmentation. The Principal R&D Engineer, Electro-Mechanical will be responsible for leading and contributing to cross-functional / multidisciplinary project teams (R&D, manufacturing, marketing, regulatory, etc.) in the early design and development of next generation breast implants, tissue expanders, and related products & processes to fulfill clinical needs within regulatory requirements. The Principal Engineer will conduct research toward new product or process development or development toward improvement of existing products or process. The individual in this position will apply comprehensive & diverse knowledge of engineering principles to a broad range of assignments and contribute inventions, new designs, new processes and techniques to solve technical problems based on customer needs. This individual will interact directly with customers (surgeons) to determine and identify unmet needs and work towards producing products to support these conditions that incorporate manufacturability into new product development. Interaction with manufacturing will be key to preparing R&D prototype testing or processing equipment for use in manufacturing.

The Principal R&D Engineer will have full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments. This individual plans and develops engineering projects concerned with unique or controversial problems which have an important effect on major organization programs. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation and development of novel concepts and approaches. This individual maintains worldwide liaison with individuals and units within or outside his/her organization with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to his/her field. Supervision received is essentially administrative with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits.

The Principal R&D Engineer will be involved with assignments that usually include one or more of the following. One, acts as individual technical expert, conceives or is assigned, plans, and conducts research in problem areas of considerable scope and complexity. The problems must be approached through a series of complete and conceptually related studies, require unconventional or novel approaches, and require sophisticated research techniques. Available guides and precedent contain critical gaps, are only partially related to the problem or may be largely due to the novel character of the project. At this level, the individual researcher generally will have contributed inventions, new designs, or techniques which are of material significance in the solution of important problems. Two, serves as the technical expert for the organization (worldwide) in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for an assigned area of responsibility (i.e., subject matter, function, type of facility, or equipment, or product). S/he keeps abreast of new methods and developments affecting his/her organization for the purpose of recommending changes in emphasis of programs or new programs warranted by such development.

The Principal R&D Engineer evaluates progress and results obtained, and recommend major changes to achieve overall objectives. Or, as individual technical expert may technically supervise other engineers or technicians on particular projects which may be related to current major projects. This individual is responsible for the purchase or design of equipment that meets health, safety and environmental standards set by the company. S/he is responsible for performing design reviews and re-validation assessments to ensure the safe and environmentally sound start-up of new processes. S/he is responsible for ensuring personal and company compliance with all Federal, State, local and company regulations, policies and procedures for Health, Safety and Environmental compliance.

Qualifications


A minimum of a Bachelors of Science Degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical preferred) or similar technology with a minimum of 12+ years of experience working in industry is required. An Advanced Degree, Masters, and/or PhD with a minimum of 10 years of experience working in industry preferred. It is preferred to have experience in the Medical Device industry. This role requires a creative, hands-on engineer to design and develop new medical devices from concept through product launch. Knowledge and experience in implementing projects in accordance with Design Control requirements is highly desirable. The successful candidate should have specific experience in system integrations and electromechanical design. The successful candidate should have Metals & Plastics component process development experience. Experience with the use of silicone polymers in device design and assembly techniques preferred but not required. The successful candidate should have Assembly Process Development, Design for Manufacturing/ Design for Assembly experience. This individual will be involved with managing outside vendors and suppliers. Ability to create tooling and fixturing designs for testing and production and CAD experience, preferably SolidWorks and/or Pro E is preferred. Medical Device experience is highly preferred. The successful candidate must possess a clear mastery of theoretical and practical fundamentals and experimental engineering techniques. S/he must have ability to manage several projects. The successful candidate must possess clearly recognizable outstanding technical qualifications and leadership. Strong English communication skills, written and oral are required. Advanced knowledge of & experience in applying engineering principles, analytical techniques & judgment to independently resolve major technical issues & establish new methods, controls & procedures is required. Experience in project management and PMP certification is preferred. Experience in project leadership of New Product Development is required for this role. A person in this position should have demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple team activities independently. It is required that the person in this position will have demonstrated experience in leading multiple complex projects. It will be an asset for the individual in this role to be an authority in one or more technical areas who are often consulted with by peers & junior engineers for guidance in his/her areas of expertise. This position is located in Santa Barbara and may require up to 30% travel both domestic and international.
