Role Overview

Reporting to the VP Global Procurement Technical Operations, the Director of Sustaining Engineering will lead a team of technical personnel in support of the technical needs of the externally manufactured product for a segment of MD&D franchises encompassing multiple product platforms and technologies. The leader of Sustaining Engineering will possess a high level of technical competence in order to organize and bring to bear the right combination of skills to address any technical issue or to capitalize on an opportunity with one of our external partners. Besides handling normal day-to-day engineering requirements for External Operations in support of exceptional quality and service, Sustaining Engineering will engage with the external partners proactively in launching new products on-time and driving cost reduction initiatives. Scope of responsibilities encompasses multiple franchise product portfolios, and a global network of external partners.

Major Responsibilities

In this role, the Director of Sustaining Engineering will own engineering responsibility and technical oversight for products made within the value streams of our external partners across the globe. This will include base business support of products ensuring exceptional quality and service, on-time execution of new products and technologies, and achieving cost reduction targets of our externally produced products.

Critical Success Factors or Scope or Responsibilities

- Develop and manage a technical support organization to cover multi-franchise, multi-technology products and processes. Recruit, develop, manage, and motivate highly trained technical professionals (engineers, scientists, project managers, et al.) to enable a highly effective work force.
- Day-to-day Sustaining Engineering supporting quality and customer service for the value streams within our external partners. Specifically items included are:

- Resolving sourcing problems of a technical nature in a rapid and thorough manner so as to mitigate quality risk and mitigate impacts to customer service.
- Improving engineering support with our external partners by providing seamless communication and strong project management that enables Design Engineering to quickly understand design issues and the impact of potential supply changes in the shortest amount of time.
- Assisting EM’s in improving reliability, yield, and increasing their performance by looking for new materials, improving designs and processes, changes in technology and inspection techniques. Should yield in improved quality and customer service and reduced total ownership costs.
- Partnering with quality and external partners, rapid diagnosis of root-cause of technical issues, and subsequent corrective and preventative measures. Provides leadership in escalating and resolving problems. Establish an effective network of subject matter experts and technical leaders that can assist in obtaining additional resources when the situation requires it.
- Execute seamless and timely transition of design or process changes with external partners ensuring all quality and regulatory requirements are met.
- Proactively identify component or raw material obsolescence issues and establish associated mitigation plans.
- With external partners and internal partners (quality & franchise operations) ensure that all new products, technologies, and services are staffed and supported adequately, deliverables are understood, and are launched per project timelines.
- Ensure that new products, technologies, and services added to the network are cost-effective and comply with J&J’s standards for operational reliability and capability, EH&S, and regulatory compliance.
- Achieve cost reduction targets through initiatives in collaboration with external partners and internal partners (quality & franchise operations).
- Develop a strategic plan and annual tactical plans for the Sustaining Engineering department that is aligned with the short term and long term sector objectives. Includes proper training and development of staff, and potentially talent acquisition. Identify strategic centers of excellence and drives best in industry performance.
- Monitors adherence to department budget.

Qualifications


- Bachelors degree in science, engineering, or supply chain disciplines is required.
- Graduate degree in science or engineering is a plus.
- MBA is a plus.
- 10-12 years of Engineering Management experience (both Product and Operations based).
- Highly successful engineering background with the ability to cover multiple engineering disciplines adeptly. Experience in delivering transformational technical change and delivery of new product on time and per budget.
- The ability to develop department and individual goals and objectives that assure achievement of business plan objectives and longer term strategic initiatives. Includes personnel training and development and a track record of developing talent.
- Change management and project management skills.
- The ability to be effective in a global environment with the ability to manage and lead technical issues with global partners.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely across all levels of the company, across the MD&D supply chain, and with the commercial franchises as appropriate.
- Deep understanding of the process excellence tool set (LEAN, Six Sigma) with a proven track record of deploying these tools to improve operational performance. Certification in LEAN and/or Six Sigma is required.
- In depth knowledge of manufacturing systems and processes, including GMP requirements for medical devices.
- Requires proficiency in project management, including obtaining agreement on project definitions and priorities and ensuring that resources, capabilities, and processes are in place to deliver the project objectives on-time and per budget.
- Competent in all aspects of Environmental, Health, and Safety per J&J standards as they are deployed to our external partners.
