The Ethicon Surgical Care business, a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is currently recruiting for an Assistant Industrial Designer to join the Industrial Design|Human Factors Team located in Cincinnati, OH.
The Ethicon Surgical Care business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies—including sutures, surgical staplers, clip appliers, trocars and synthetic mesh devices—that are used in a wide variety of minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. Specialties include support for treatment of colorectal and thoracic conditions, women’s health conditions, hernias, cancer and obesity. The Ethicon Surgical Care business combines products and services of two market leading legacy companies, both with long histories of medical innovation. Ethicon, Inc. based in Somerville, New Jersey, was founded more than 80 years ago as a pioneer in suture development and manufacturing, helping to transform the safety and electiveness of open surgery. The Industrial Design|Human Factors Team is responsible for numerous programs at various stages in the product development process. We work closely with R&D, Clinical and Marketing partners to ensure that design vision, brand attributes and usability standards are maintained. Our team is a diverse group of collaborative professionals striving to deliver remarkable design and exceptional business results. The successful candidate will be a key supporting member of the team, moving seamlessly between the following roles:
Concept Visualization. You will create deliverables that capture, communicate, and refine ideas generated by you and others on the team. You will determine the tools to use and the appropriate level of detail based on the project schedule and workload. You will make informed design judgments as the requirements evolve, present a range of options, and help facilitate meaningful evaluation and final concept selection.
Problem Solving. You possess a keen understanding of how things work, how they are used and how they are made. You are familiar with injection molding, machining and other manufacturing principles and you endeavor to strike a balance between aesthetics, manufacturability and usability as you generate and develop ideas. Daily interaction, communication and collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team is essential.
Geometry Development. You have excellent 3D surfacing and modeling skills using Alias and/or SolidWorks or Unigraphics NX. You embrace CAD as a design tool and consider a database that captures the subtlety of design intent a source of pride.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design. Professional experience, internships, Medical Device or clinical experience is a strong plus. Excellent 3D surfacing and modeling skills using Alias and/or SolidWorks and/or Unigraphics NX. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Photoshop and Illustrator. Animation, Graphic Design, Video or other Multi-Media software skills is a strong plus. Superior verbal, written and visual presentation skills. A self-directed, organized and priority driven work ethic.
A strong portfolio demonstrating: 2D sketching and ideation using digital and/or traditional tools. Mechanical and User Centered problem solving skills. Outstanding visualization and rendering skills. 3D CAD and traditional modeling skills.
