The Senior Biotechnician works in the Laboratory Animal Medicine group within the Preclinical Development and Safety (PD&S) Department in San Diego, CA, USA. The Senior Biotechnician will report directly to the Lab Animal Medicine (LAM) Biotechnician Team Lead. He/she must work well independently and in a close team environment and will be required to interact professionally with other LAM staff and laboratory research investigators. Routine work hours will be approximately 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM (daily, Monday through Friday) including weekends, holidays and overtime rotations as needed.

The Senior Biotechnician will perform duties to support animal welfare (health care) and use, including but not limited to providing animal feed and water and non-routine husbandry such quarantine operations. The Senior Biotechnician responsibilities also include daily observations of animals, health monitoring, cage wash and animal holding/procedure room sanitation and supply/storage space stocking and/or maintenance, equipment, waste disposal and appropriate recordkeeping.

The job function requires a large amount of bending, stooping, and standing throughout the day for processing large numbers of fresh and used rodent cages (delivery and pick-up). Supplies, that do not exceed 50 lbs, must be lifted by hand. Equipment, in excess of 150 lbs. must be pushed and pulled with special equipment routinely in order for these tasks to be completed. This individual must be able to perform simple maintenance on equipment (i.e., cage washer, autoclave, automated water dispenser), prepare and use dilutions of disinfectant solutions, stock supplies, perform sanitation duties (maintenance of floors, walls, stainless steel and handle enclosed biohazard waste and nonhazardous waste materials/trash), while using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to safety glasses, steel toe shoes, latex gloves and uniform) provided and portraying safe behaviors (i.e., using step stool and safety glasses).

The Senior Biotechnician performs timely inventory, animal and laboratory supply orders; and assists with the coordination of biological sample (blood, tissue) collection, preparation, storage, shipping and handling. This individual will perform animal dosing and clinical observations. S/he serves as a cross-trainer for other staff (FTEs, Temps) on various animal care and husbandry duties to support the welfare of rodents (rat, mouse, guinea pig). S/he may be involved in mouse breeding and pedigree tracking as well as other basic research support.

Qualifications


A minimum of a High school diploma is required. An Associate’s Degree, BA/BA, and/or AAALAS Certification is preferred. A minimum of 5 years of experience in a laboratory animal medicine environment is required. Basic computer competency is required. The ability to develop the knowledge and application of current local, state and federal guides, laws and regulations pertaining to the care and use of laboratory animals is required. Vaccinations and/or immunizations experience may also be a condition of employment and is preferred. . The successful candidate will be able to work routine work hours approximately 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM (daily, Monday through Friday) including weekends, holidays and overtime rotations as needed. This position is located in La Jolla, CA and may require <10% travel.
